I sometimes think about that first time we flew in a plane where we were totally dependent on instruments. We were coming into Anchorage, Alaska, in a Navajo Chieftain, and the airport was all “socked in” with fog. The pilot kept checking with the tower as to how much visibility we had and, finally, when we were about 10 miles out, got the okay to land. I remember the helpless feeling I had as we descended into that last fog bank, and everything disappeared! I was watching the altimeter as we got lower and lower.
But it didn’t faze our Alaskan bush pilot! He just calmly brought that plane through the dense fog until we saw the runway just ahead.
As we traveling musicians breathed a collective sigh of relief, he put the wheels on the tarmac and brought that plane in.
You see, he had complete faith that he could rely on his instruments — no matter if all he could see was fog. As long as he “steered” according to those gauges, he knew that we would be okay. I guess our faith wasn’t quite at that level, and we were sure glad to get off that flight!
The world we live in here is full of uncertainties, irregularities, disparities, and inequities. In spite of not being sure of what’s ahead of us, it’s just really good to know that we can trust our God — He does know the details of the future we face!
It might look like thick fog to our eyes, but it’s crystal clear to Him. The learning curve of trusting that God is in control of our future is a
vital part of our spiritual journey and essential to deepening our relationship with the Lord.
