When I was a young child, my grandfather used to take me outside at night to look at the stars and the moon. “If we don’t go outside
to look at the stars and the moon, they will stop shining, and the lights will go out and the night sky will be dark and empty,” he’d tell me, and I’d believe him.
I never understood how the rest of the family could sit inside watching television when the night sky was so full of beauty. When my
own children were young, I’d take them out at night and show them the stars and tell them about their great-grandfather who loved the night sky. My four-year-old daughter, Storm, wondered if a star could fall out of the sky, fall on her, and smash her flat? I told her God hung the stars in the sky and they would not fall (Job 9:9).
Astronomers estimate there are 200 billion trillion stars, but we can only see about 10,000 of them. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could see the sky the way God intended? “Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens. He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls
forth each of them by name” Isaiah 40:26 (NIV).
Every Christmas Eve, I go outside at midnight and look at the sky and search for “The Christmas Star,” that led the wise men to Bethlehem. Of course, it isn’t there, but I search for the brightest star and pretend it is the Christmas Star.
Each one of us is worth more than a star because God has billions of stars, but each one of us is unique and special.
