“Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what He taught.” Luke 10:39 (NLT)
This is an interesting story, but so good! If you have sisters, then you may understand Martha. When I was young and had to do the
dishes, I would complain to my mom that my other sister should be helping me!
Yet, in all seriousness, there is great value in this story of Mary and Martha. Jesus went to eat at their house and Martha was preparing
the food and such, but Mary was sitting at Jesus’ feet listening to Him and learning.
Martha complains to Jesus about Mary not helping her. The thing is that both Martha and Mary loved the Lord and wanted to learn from Him. However, in this case, Martha was getting quite distracted in her serving.
There is nothing wrong with serving, but in Martha’s good intention, she became distracted and anxious. Jesus did not get upset with
Martha, but gently said that she was getting too concerned with all the preparations — that there was something that needed more consideration. It was to sit at Jesus’ feet.
Since I first trusted in Jesus, I have had this desire to want to know Him and learn more of who He is and His Word. I remember first having that desire — and then a month later I was in class with my mom studying the Bible at Key-Way-Tin Bible Institute. I pray that the desire to “sit at Jesus feet” will never cease.
