One afternoon I was giving announcements at my workplace. All of a sudden, it felt like my air supply had been completely cut off.
My heart was racing, everything started to spin, and I couldn’t breathe!
This began an unexpected health journey for me. It took nearly a year to discover the root cause. I went through all kinds of tests, and all of them came back normal. Heart and lungs were all good, but I still felt like I couldn’t breathe. Walking and talking were reduced to
a minimum. I even had to use a wheelchair so I wouldn’t fall down.
In time, it was discovered that the basement of the house I was renting was filled with black mold. The mold was so severe that a crew
in hazmat suits came in and took everything out and burned it. No wonder I was so sick!
A small portion of mold is not so harmful but, when it spreads, it becomes something that is potentially deadly. That is much like our sins. One small thought can lead to actions that are uncontainable. Like mold, our sins grow and make us sick from the inside out. Eventually, our spiritual air supply is cut off, and we can no longer breathe in the good things God has for us.
In the Bible, Cain let the “mold” grow, and the root of jealousy led him to take the life of his brother, Abel (Genesis 4). Our sin nature is
so dark, it requires us to stay connected to God on a daily basis, so that we don’t allow the wrong things to take hold in our lives.
Jesus, help me to continually come to You and submit my thoughts and actions over to You. Don’t let sin consume my life. Help me to
keep the dangers of “mold” from growing in my heart.
