I guess the issue of “consequences” is something we all need to get a handle on at some time or another.
We were on tour, down in central Washington State a bunch of years back, and we found out that we had a couple days off. That wasn’t so bad, since there was a local vineyard there that some of the local guys worked in to make “day money” — and all the boys in our band got offered a day or two of work. That sounded pretty good, so we went for it!
I had envisioned a nice cool work environment, slaving contentedly beneath the shade of the grape trees. Surprise, surprise . . . when
we found out that the grapevines (vines, not trees) were just starting out and were about eight inches high, all visions of shade disappeared.
As that hot American sun beat down on our shirtless shoulders, somebody said something about sunburn. Ah, I wasn’t worried. I hadn’t
had a sunburn since I was about seven years old. It wasn’t gonna happen to me. Yeah, right.
After I finished up the day’s work and collected my $60 US, I started hurting . . . really hurting! My skin started peeling and the pain was just awful. Why, oh why, had I not listened when they said I should use that sunblock? I had about three or four days to ponder that thought as my skin healed and the pain slowly subsided.
Consequences, outcomes and side effects are all bunkmates. What we do, what we allow, what we decide — all those “whats” come with results.
When we are making a choice, we need to evaluate beforehand what the possible outcomes are. I’m writing this for anyone that is in a
“valley of decision” right now. Whatever the choices and options that you are facing, seek Godly counsel and consider the consequences.
